The History of the Eastern Cape

The SAN retreated leaving their title deeds in the form of ‘rock art’ behind, all over Southern Africa. The Eastern Cape was fully inhabited during the advent of Xhosa immigration .

For the past five years the family has been working with an unreached people group in north eastern Mozambique. For the first time, people in that region are reading scripture in their own language and the impact is awesome!

In scenes reminiscent of the Book of Acts tribal religious leaders in remote north eastern Mozambique are enthusiastically telling their people the greatest news that has ever reached their region — the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Volunteer cleanup squad members removing some of the illegal abortion posters that are plastered all over Port Elizabeth. They are, from the left, Val Viljoen, David Hobson and Shelley Walters.

Many people in PE have noticed an increase in abortion stickers on poles, signboards and walls all over Port Elizabeth. One person has decided to tackle the problem by mobilising local Christians to join hands in ridding the city of these illegal and offensive posters.

PE freelance public speaker, Shelley Walters said when she first noticed the proliferation of illegal abortion stickers she felt angry that the local Government did not appear to be taking steps to remove them. “Then I was challenged by the word that says we are the light of the world. I felt if we are going to be a people who are called the light of the world then we should be people who remove litter.”

Thieves pillaging historic PE church

Holy Trinity Church in Havelock Square Port Elizabeth has suffered serious damage at the hands of thieves who strip copper and lead at night. The congregation fear more thefts and have appealed for support in protecting and repairing the historic building.

Brazen thieves have been relentlessly stripping the Holy Trinity Church in Central, Port Elizabeth, of copper and lead fittings , causing serious damage to the historic stone building.

In a series of night-time assaults the thieves have stripped lead lining and copper flashing off roofs resulting in major water leaks with in some cases irreparable damage to paint, documents, historical photographs, wooden furnishings , carpets and ceilings. They have also removed wire mesh grilles protecting stain glass windows, provoking fears that the lead in the stained glass windows is being targeted. The church has 12 stained-glass windows with an estimated value of R400 000 each.

Rector David Stansbury points out an area where copper flashing and lead lining have been riped out, exposing the church to rain damage.

“Even 100 year old memorial plaques are being ripped out of the walls to sell for scrap,” said church member Sandy Peasnall, who is overseeing a campaign to secure funding to protect and repair the building.

“My husband is going there with all his staff this morning to do temporary damage control to stop further damage due to the rain pouring in and now destroying the walls and the age old wooden pews,” she said today.

“We are doing enquiries regarding installing spotlights around the church building as a matter of extreme urgency. We hope to find a good Samaritan before the end of this week.”

The church, in Havelock Square, was built in 1866 and then rebuilt after a fire in 1897. Today it is a spiritual home for a cosmopolitan city centre congregation, including members from a number of African countries.

The cost of repairs required to the church is being assessed but is likely to run into hundreds of thousands of rands. Peasnall said the church members did not have the financial means to carry the cost of repairs alone, and appealed for public support towards the restoration of a building “that belongs to our history and our city”.

“Any help will be appreciated. Security, financial, advice or physical help,” she said.

All the theft incidents have been reported to police who have requested patrol vehicles to keep a watch for suspicious activity around the church at night.

My View

I see there's a new magazine publication called “NEWSNOW” which is running its twentieth addition. Is this replacing the previous government sponsored “To the Point” magazine, or is it yet another addition to the ANC’s “New Age” propoganda newspaper? I think the editorials are shallow judging by the article above, and would better appeal to Africa’s uneducated masses.

Comparing high schools and high school fees of first world countries like Australia and the UK won’t help. Hundreds of thousands of third world and even first World students flock to those countries to enjoy the benefits of first world education in PUBLIC schools. The last time we enjoyed similar standards in South Africa was during the Nationalist Party reign. Since then we have had to deal with the new education system, drugs, guns, teachers who can’t spell, sexual predators (ask Oprah), OBE, 30% subject pass rates, high class room occupancy, high profile people (if you know what I mean) pushing their way to the front of queues despite long waiting lists for places, etc.

The ANC have driven out first world students to private schools through the indigenization process, the process whereby everyone is free to achieve “equality education” (ie. the lowest common denominator). We’ve had no choice but to seek out private education even though the price has been staggering under ANC rule.

Comparing prices either also won’t work for obvious exchange rate, value of currency and pay rate reasons.

The Ruins of Milton High School Bulawayo

This is Milton High twenty years after the fall of Rhodesia. The school at the time I went there had the best teachers money could buy, manicured lawns and pamperd buildings, everything you would find in the best First World education system. After twenty years of being ridiculed and being forced to Africanise education, the white teachers and professionals retreated, and Milton High became fully indiginised.

Above is a satellite picture of what blacks have done to one of the best schools in the world, trees are seen growing in streets where teachers cars would drive along. A tree growing in the empty pool, but in my day filled with filtered crystal blue sparkling water. Tennis courts once painted green with white indication lines are a mere mist of what they once were. A sportsground watered and manicured to table top precision lies dead and unattended. Roofs once painted red are showing signs of rust and decay as the oxide undercoating protrudes. In fact most of the schools I have attended in Southern Africa are suffering the same fate under Africa’s know it all black leadership.

I have personally been to Seaview Game Park many times and it is one of those small game reserves where you will be able to see a variety Africa's animals in the wild. In bigger Parks such as the Kruger National Park you won't always have the opportunity of watching live lions, but at Seaview Game Park the visitor is assured of this wonderful experience. It may even be possible to hold a small lion cub such as we were able to do on one of our visits, and before leaving you will be able to have a cup of tea in the restuarant atop a hill overlooking the Indian Ocean.

This Depot was for the horses offloaded at Port Elizabeth's harbour for use by British troops during the Boer War. Over 30 000 horses died during the battles and are buried all over the Transvaal and Natal. The Horse Memorial in Cape Road stands as testimony to the part these animals played in the War effort. The British also took great care in looking after the animals.

Our Christian Heritage

The original church of St Paul was first established in 1854. Placed on the edge of Albany Road on the hill near Main Street gave way to a new church structure in Parsons Hill about 1KM from the Green Acres shopping center. The church can be viewed from many roads one of which is Diaz Street looking south. The congregation has also changed many times in its 150 year existence and I believe many original sacramental items including the original stained glass windows are to be found in the new Parsons Road church structure.

Sir Rufane and Elizabeth Donkin Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

The Donkin has always been an open Park, bought and set aside by Sir Rufane Donkin for the people of Port Elizabeth to enjoy en perpetuity. On this site Sir Rufane Donkin built a Memorial to his deceased wife Elizabeth (nee Markham) whom he dearly loved. Sir Rufane Donkin and his wife Elizabeth were Christians and absolutely no political statement is made by the memorial except one of enduring love.

The memorial was erected on a hill overlooking the city below and gave all Port Elizabethans that spacial feeling so typical of Africa, especially those whose homes were built in close proximity to it. Since 1994 the ANC had other ideas about the Park, and like so many unwelcome decisions they have made over other people’s lives and property the changes made to the Donkin come as no surprise.

The Donkin originally consisted of the memorial, and later a lighthouse was added in the mid 1800’s through necessity. Originally paths were laid to traverse each of the corners of the park for people to use when walking to work or for strolling along in leisure hours, and the rest of the Donkin Memorial was laid out with well manicured lawns with a few trees and a sprinkling of lamp posts for lighting at night.

However judging by all the changes already made to the Donkin and obvious to anyone who has seen them, the ANC clearly wanted to make an iconic statement to its existence, one which we do not care for. The memory of the Donkin family is clearly being squeezed out and cunningly engineered so by changing the focus of the park. Would Sir Rufane Donkin have been happy with the changes? I think not. For all the absurd thinkers of those supporting the changes, how did Mandela or the ANC do anything meaningful for this city since 1820?

The park is now categorized thematically:
On the north western side an oasis has been planted, what appears to be the ANC’s most cherished tree, the Palm. Just beyond the Palms facing the 1820 Settler homes across the road, welded scrap metal pipes, probably collected from Central's decaying suburbs has been piled together to form a hideous African sculpture. Certainly not my cup of tea.

A tourist kiosk has also been erected next to the Elizabeth Donkin memorial with Mandela’s name scribbled permanently on one of the facades. Now is this surprising? This historical revisionist programme is also being duplicated elsewhere eg. The so called peace park placed opposite an Afrikaner monument in Pretoria, and laying South African War inscriptions on the walk way near the entrance to a Second World War Monument dedicated to our heroes of the previous World War. None of these changes are accidental in my opinion and none of the new reflect like the old, the GOD of Glory.

On the western edge of the Park near the King Edwards Hotel the designers have placed a solid metal statue clearly designed in such a way as to subtly evoke a picture of “great Xhosan stature”, but which to me looks more like Darth Vader from the movie “Star Wars” holding a chair for an absent induna.

There is also an Aloe rockery placed on the western side of the Donkin Memorial midway between the King Edward Hotel and the Elizabeth Donkin Memorial, and if anything, this is the most sensible addition to the Park in my view.

There are other bits and pieces such as plastic seats molded in the form of sails to emulate Algoa Bay’s marine sports. There is also a lot of mosaic work around the lighthouse with an inordinate use of red in the design. On the Eastern edge of the Donkin the area is being designed for recreational sport, possibly volley ball or something else which I assume will make the park very busy once it has been completed. Judging by the type of person who will hang out at the park when all the work is complete it’s not exactly the kind of place where one would take the grand kids for a stroll. The entire area around the Donkin is completely run down and I hear is full of Nigerian drug lords and opportunistic criminals.

The final, and probably the ANC’s most bletcherous addition to the Donkin is a lazer cut metal sculptor of Mandela, with his so called followers pressing onward behind him. As if we care! The depiction is one of a “valiant” Mandela reaching the zenith of the Donkin Memorial after a nasty struggle. He carries neither a Cross nor a Sickle, but if he carried the former I would certainly pay attention. The Elizabeth Donkin Memorial has now lost the reason for its original existence and is simply converted as another ANC shrine, designed to remove any previous memory of our Christian Heritage.

The Castle Cape Town Cape Colony

The picture below is from the Netherlands and boasts a mirror image of the Dutch Castle in Cape Town . Many Dutch settlers came from this area in Holland to the Cape of Good Hope. Jan Van Riebeeck also hailed from this part of the Netherlands hence the exact architectural details of the Castle in Cape Town. These castle fortifications were developed in the Netherlands to keep the advancing Catholics out and the design was useful in this regard.

When the British took over the Cape in 1795 the Castle fell under their administration. Many of the Dutch Settlers disliked the British administration and left the Cape for the first time. By the 1820’s the first British settlers arrived en masse in the Eastern Cape and the discovery of gold on the reef changed the political landscape for the Dutch Settlers in South Africa forever.

Quote: “In 1580 William of Orange gave the order to build a fort on the sand ridge in the Bourtanger moor, on the border of modern Germany. On the order of William Louis of Nassau the fortress was raised in 1593.* Between 1593 and 1851 Bourtange was an important fortress. An agrarian village came into being when the fortress was dismantled in 1851. Only a few buildings still remembered the glory of yesteryear. In the nineteen sixties** the county of Vlagtwedde took the initiative to reconstruct the fortress. The plan was implemented between 1967 and 1992. Ramparts were again raised, ditches were dug and soldiers’ barracks were built. Visitors of present day Bourtange believe themselves to be back centuries in time. Meet the fortress which has never been taken ... Maybe we’ll see you in the year 1742!”

My deepest desire is no longer for things which fade and pass me by,
Although it has been so long now that my heart on these things has been fixed;

I know we need the basic things in order to survive,
For we are only human and feel hunger, cold and pain,
Food and warmth and clothing to keep us all alive
And homes to give us shelter from the storms and wind and rain.

God created people and so does understand
That we are weak and needy, for He was human too;
He faced each problem that we face, He walked a sin-sick land
Was tempted, tried and punished for wrong He didn’t do.

I have a deep supreme desire to be like Jesus Christ,
To follow Him more closely and make Him King and Lord;
And by His grace I’ll never from His presence be enticed
by all the thrills and glamour that this poor world can afford.

Make me more like You, Lord, and fill me with that love
which burned within Your tender heart and sent You down to earth;
You sacrificed Your everything when You left Your home above,
to lead us to Your Father and to show us what we’re worth.

So touch me, dear Lord Jesus, and make me Yours alone,
Remove the sin within my life and make me fully whole;
