Glory to GOD in the Highest Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

For Our Pastor

Written when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour
February 2006

My life is in Your loving hands – the best place it could be
And I am mindful that You are “the Lord Who healeth me.” 1
No matter what may come my way, whatever trials I’ll face,
I’m strengthened 2 and encouraged by Your overwhelming grace.

You never said my path on earth would always turn out straight,
And sometimes answers to my prayers would not be “Yes” but “Wait”,
And as I put my trust in You, I know You’ll lead and guide,
Through troubled times You’ll carry me, You’ll never leave my side. 3

You are my Father, I’m Your child, for whom You want the best,
And just as gold is purified, I must go through this test, 4
It’s not for me to question why right now I should be ill,
Your Word gives life and so I rest in Your own perfect will.

Your Word is like a lamp to me, to lighten up my way, 5
Your promises, like precious jewels, are steadfast day by day,
Your purposes will be fulfilled, of this one thing I’m sure 6
And You will never ask of me more than I can endure. 7

Your Holy Spirit in me equips for every task,
And all my needs You will supply – I simply have to ask; 8
Though feelings change and fears arise, Your truth I’ll boldly speak
and in the dark and lonely hours it’s Your face I will seek.

You also faced the struggles through which we, too, must go, 9
And You had pain and anguish that we could never know;
How good to trust a Saviour Who my every day has planned 10
Who never errs or makes mistakes, Who will always understand.

And so I thank You for Your gifts, for FAITH when I would fall 11
for HOPE when things seem hopeless, 12
for LOVE (best gift of all);
And nothing that I ever do can make You love me less 13
for Your heart is turned towards me, to enrich, inspire and bless.

So much must be accomplished in the service of my King,
And my life is like an offering which to Your feet I bring;
And in Your time I’ll hear You call and meet You, blessed Lord
to hear those age-old words, “Well Done!” will be my great reward. 14

Deforestation Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

DEFORESTATION

Brutal, savage, senseless acts as forests are stripped bare
For callous, greedy people show they simply do not care,
The perfect world God fashioned, with everything in place
now wearing out as man’s pollutants waft up into space.

What will become of all the beauty we’ve been blessed to know
when ice-caps melt, when soil erodes, when trees no longer grow?
As future generations cannot share in what we’ve seen,
When dry and barren earth encroaches where once trees have been.

There’s too much talk about it – it’s time we got things done,
As factories churn out endless filth and thus obscure the sun;
So plant a tree and take a stand, do something of real worth
to make a difference and restore our one and only earth.

FAITH

Though dark and lonely is the path and I can’t clearly see,
Though storms may rage in fury, and uncertain life may be;
Though all around seems hopeless and the future cold and bleak,
Though overwhelmed by fear and doubt, it’s God’s face I will seek.

It’s trusting in a faithful God Who’ll never let me go,
It’s looking to a future that only God can know,
It’s claiming every promise so that on God’s Word I stand
It’s knowing that I’m safely held within God’s mighty hand.

Charles Collier Michell Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

Charles Collier Michell was a cousin of Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin and came to South Africa. He was a gifted man, surveyor, painter and architect.

Quote below: Wikipedia.org

"Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Collier Michell, (29 March 1793–28 March 1851), later known as Charles Cornwallis Michell, was a British soldier, first surveyor-general in the Capee, road engineer, architect, artist and naturalist.

Early life

Born in Exeter, Devonn, and called Charles Cornwallis Michell later in his life because of the proximity to Cornwall of his birthplace, Michell was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1809. He headed a brigade at the battles of Vittoria and Toulouse, took part in Waterloo and was appointed teacher of military drawing at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst on 24 March 1824 and professor of military fortification at Woolwich on 25 December 1825 and promoted to the brevet rank of major shortly thereafter. He was fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French.

Cape of Good Hope

Michell was appointed as surveyor-general at the Cape in 1828, (having probably heard of the post through his cousin Rufane Donkin) at the same time holding the positions of superintendent of public works and civil engineer. For performing these functions, he received an annual salary of £800. The surveyor-general's duties included taking charge of the detailed surveys needed to produce a good map of the Colony, improving passes and roads and surveying the Colony's border accurately. He was an outstanding architect, designing various churches such as St. Paul's in Rondebosch and St. John's in Bathurst. He suggested improvements to Table Bay Harbour and designed lighthouses at Mouille Point, Cape Agulhas (supposedly modelled on the Pharos of Alexandria) and Cape Recife".
