Port Elizabeth 1862

This Picture shows Port Elizabeth and Algoa Bay in 1862 a thriving town since the first settlers arrived in 1820. The last ships with paid fares by the British government was in 1859 after which people had to pay for passage themselves. In any event most of the potential settlers decided to stay well clear because of the Frontier Wars which were widely known back home so it was difficult for the British government to source large groups of willing immigrants to Africa. Many of us who live in Africa sympathise with the decisions which were made by our kith and kin and if having the resources and the means would choose to go back to our homeland.
