Blacks Murder British Couple Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth
A British couple were found bludgeoned to death in the back of their car after being attacked while their seaside home in South Africa was ransacked.
The bodies of Christopher and Jennifer Early were discovered by local police in their Volvo following the robbery.
The couple, aged 69 and 62, were murdered last Thursday at the property in the coastal resort of Hibberdene, detectives believe.
Identity documents showed they came originally from Britain but were understood to have moved to South Africa in the 1980s.
A police spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal Province said the couple were attacked with a "blunt object".

Minister Richard Gush and Westering High School Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth
Richard Gush
Pastor Richard Gush (1789–1858), a Christian Missionary from the village Beer in Devon England, arrived in the Eastern Cape from Britian and settled in Salem (peace) near Grahamstown, in South Africa. He was a devout Christian from the Quaker church and was known for his heroic act of saving Salem from Xhosa warriors, riding out to meet them unarmed. He succesfully negotiated with them, and Salem was saved from ever being attacked again, or their cattle stolen. Although the picture of Gush seems stern, he showed his Love for the LORD, and the people of South Africa, by building a church in Salem.

"These events inspired Guy Butler to write Richard Gush of Salem, a play that was commissioned by the Cape Performing Arts Board in 1968 for performance in 1970 as part of the celebrations of 150th anniversary of the 1820 Settlers' arrival. It was subsequently made into a movie.
Gush was a carpenter and built Salem's first church. Only after building the church did he build his house: indeed he and his family lived in a cave for their first seven years in South Africa.
A sports house at Westering High School, Port Elizabeth is named in his honour.

This is the coolest fun, seriously! When you buy tickets for the super tube located on the beachfront, you get 10 elastic bands which you put around your wrist or ankle. Everytime you climb the steps to the top to slide down the super tube, you pay with one elastic band. When they're finished you go through the same cycle again because the fun is so addictive.

The foundation stone for the first building was laid on the 23 April 1881 and the Church was consecrated by Bishop Merriman on the 3rd Sept of that year. The rectory was the next to be built and was completed in 1893. The first resident minister was the Revd A.H.D.Cass.
It was in 1907 that the Church was extended as pictured above. This happened during the ministry of the Revd H.G. Mosel who served as Rector of this Parish for 46 years.
The current Parish Centre was the original rectory built in 1893 and the Lych Gate was the next to be built in 1912 in honour of Richard Smith. The Lych Gate dedicated on the 27 October 1912
After the First World War the community of Walmer worked hard to build the Memorial Hall to commemorate the men and women of Walmer who died in service during that war. The Hall was formally opened on the 11th October 1928 by the Revd J Pattison….”

“Bishop Webb granted the collegiate church a coat of arms and seal on 3 April 1894. The seal is in the form of a vesica – a double-pointed oval, well suited to ecclesiastical arms as they can comfortably contain a shield in the lower half and a mitre in the upper.
The original of this document was lost when the church building was destroyed by fire in 1895, and a duplicate deed of grant was made the following year by Bishop Webb and signed on 4 March 1896….
St Mary’s, the first Anglican church erected in what came to be called the Eastern Province of the Cape Colony, was founded in 1825 by the Rev Francis McCleland, an Irish 1820 Settler who in that year was appointed Colonial Chaplain to the settlement of some 500 people.
The Irish settlers had initially been sent to live at Clanwilliam, some 200 km north of Cape Town, on the grounds that the volatile Irish were likely to clash violently with the other settlers. However, they had felt isolated in that environment and requested permission to join the English, Welsh and Scottish settlers in the Eastern Cape…..
