William Darlow was a native of Kineton Warwickshire UK and arrived in South Africa in 1859 aboard the 'Bride One' with his wife Sarah Darlow (nee Ashmore) and their four children. The family owned two butcheries., one in Parliament Street, and one in Russell Road, as well as property in Rink Street. This family also had two sheep farms in the Cradock area which supplied meat for the butcheries, and wool for export. William Darlow is buried in St Mary's Cemetery with other family members. Their genealogy is written on a tombstone slate with the script facing the sand which has preserved it in pristine condition over the years.
