Ever took the trouble to look at a person’s hands noting their subtle texture and gracious movements. Have you observed the miracle of anatomy at work, the incredible dexterity of the hand, all made possible by the interwoven muscle , delicate sinew, divinely engineered bones, flexible joints, all wrapped in the wondrous elasticity of skin? Hands can tell you something about a person, even their HAND MAKER? Hands like the eyes, mirror your inner thoughts and reveal aspects of your soul. A fortune teller uses the hands to give meaning to your past and to project the future, so the story goes. But hands tell you something about the awesome power of GOD, how fearfully and wonderfully you’ve been made in his image. Your hands and what you do with them express your inner feelings and desires and reveal the character of a person more quickly than trying to unwrap the hidden mysteries of someone’s life through hours of therapy in the psychologist’s room.
Have you ever considered that man’s most exceptional accomplishments have been achieved by directing one’s thoughts and energy through the hands? Think of Michelangelo with his beautiful painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Think of the awesome structure of St. Peter’s Basilica and even the more recent marvel of science, the Hubble Telescope. And then there’s the Great Wall of China and the incredible Paul Getty Museum with all its hidden art treasures. Think of the heavenly sounds of Handel’s “Messiah”, as the hands of the musicians play each musical note. Consider the Written Word such as Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” nailed to the Wittenburg door, or the Bible in your own language before the advent of the printing press. Think of the inner workings of the ancient clock and its impact on the life of the world, as Londoners find in “Big Ben”. These feats were all accomplished through the diligent work of the hands.
The beautiful hands of mother Teresa. (Mother Teresa – The Spirit and the Work)
Your hands express your deepest emotions, ever heard the saying concerning “idle hands”? Have you taken the time to observe the hands of lovers in a loving embrace? Or the person receiving reassurance through a pat on the back? Have you ever been in awe after consciously taking in the wondrous beauty of the head of a baby being supported in the palm of its mothers hand, or the gentle clasp of a baby’s tiny hand as it clings to its mother’s finger? Caste your mind back to a time when you’ve seen a husband’s face encompassed by the hands of a wife in loving desire, or the hands placed atop a child’s head as a reminder of a parents love. Now think of the power in Mother Teraea’s hands when she was active in ministry.
Focus on the hands of those closest to you, such as those of your friends, your fiancĂ©, your husband, your wife, and even your children. Think of a baby’s hands, the image of love that comes to mind, the way GOD intends the image to be. Hands can be soft and warm, gentle and reassuring, like those of a nurse. Sometimes hands can be rough and strong like those of THE CARPENTER, the same hands they nailed to a tree.
Mary with the baby JESUS attended by angels. What work can a man do with his hands that is greater than this? (William Bouguereau’s “The Virgin with Angels” 1824-1905. The picture was displayed at the Paul Getty Museum in California. See ARC www.artrenewal.org )
The loving intimacy of your partner can even be sensed while holding her hand as you stroll through a park, or the intimacy you have with your CREATOR as you kneel beside your bed with your hands placed side by side, as a sign of humility and surrender to JESUS. Thank GOD for the wonder and power of your hands. Lay hands on the sick and the dying and they will recover just as the Bible teaches you. Let your hands do good, and do not use your hands for an evil cause, then the GOOD HAND of your FATHER will be on you. Always fall into the HAND of GOD before you trust the hands of men – LOVE through the gift and power of your hands.
