HMS Dorsetshire Visits Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

The Dorsetshire was built and completed on the 29 January 1929 in England's ship-yards and had a crew of 650 men. I am certain this was this ship under the command of Vice-Admiral Evans which docked in Port Elizabeth Harbour in Quay One, also known as the Charl Malan Pier. There were a number of dignitaries which came ashore for the commemoration of the completion of the harbour in Port Elizabeth. A welcoming boost and asset to the economy. The Dorsetshire was also refitted in Simonstown on one occasion and was a visitor to the Port of Durban. This same ship was instrumental in the sinking of the German warship the 'Bismark and saved a number of German sailors after its sinking. The Dorsetshire was tragically sunk by the Japanese during World War 11.
