The Snowman (42) Algoa Bay Port Elizabeth

THE SNOWMAN
To children he brings laughter and pleasure and delight,
For when the snow starts falling and the world is dazzling white
little hands get busy piling up the frozen stuff
to build a friendly snowman who is NEVER big enough!

A very happy fellow with a tummy to his knees
and arms that would give gentle hugs (although you’d surely freeze)!
A carrot stuck on for a nose and pebbles for a smile;
A hat – some gloves – a walking stick – to give him plenty style.

It’s seldom in our sun-baked land that we will have the chance
to build our own dear snow-man, and round about him dance;
But snow falls very quickly in icy, northern lands
and soon a snowman will take shape from many eager hands.

He likes the bitter weather and the chilling winter blast,
The colder that he’s feeling, the longer he will last;
But when the sun starts shining (it’s sad but we all know)
The jolly (short-lived) snowman soon becomes just melted snow!
