The 56-year-old man, whom police have declined to identify until his next of kin had been informed, was found yesterday after neighbours noticed a strong smell emanating from the garden.
The man's badly decomposed body was found hidden under bags containing garden refuse next to the swimming pool at his Sunnyside home.
Shocked hair salon workers, who run their business from a rented room in the man's Schoeman Street home opposite Arcadia Primary School, said they could not believe he was dead. "We are extremely shocked. It is really terrible," said a hairdresser, who asked not to be named.
Police said it seemed that the man was killed either on Friday or Saturday after he was apparently hit over the head with the handle of a pick-axe
US embassy spokesperson Mark Schlachter confirmed that the man found murdered was indeed a US citizen. He said at this stage he could not divulge the man's name, what his occupation was or how long he had been in South Africa-IOL NEWS-
